The holidays are about family, and spending as much time as we can with our loved ones. Meet Jake and Charlotte Forystek- a dynamic father/daughter duo who train at NOVA Pewaukee, having found a unique way to spend more time together: training BJJ on the mats.

Nova Gyms Pewaukee BJJ Family

NOVA: How long have you been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a whole, and when did you start your training at Nova?

Charlotte: We started in March, then it shut down because of the pandemic and we started training again in June.

NOVA: What made each of you decide to start your journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Charlotte: My dad introduced it to me and I thought that it was a great idea, and my interest in sports has always been wrestling and grappling. They cancelled middle school wrestling this year, so I am happy I can learn jiu jitsu.

Jake: I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the military when I was deployed to Iraq. I wanted to join a school as soon as I got back in 2005, but my wife and I were starting a family and were busy with family, careers, etc. We have three daughters.  Charlotte is the youngest one, and she is the first who expressed interest in learning BJJ.  That was my ticket!

NOVA: How much has jiu jitsu changed you, not just physically, but mentally?

Charlotte: Jiu jitsu has strengthened me physically and has given me an open mindset about grappling.

Jake: Training BJJ has helped me lose my COVID-19 belly and get in shape as a wrestling coach.  It has improved my mindset in many ways.  It gives me something to look forward to after a stressful day.  It’s super fun learning something new.  It teaches humility and a growth mindset.  It’s super humbling getting submitted repeatedly, but that makes getting your first submission even better.

NOVA: What would you say is the most positive benefit of training jiu jitsu?

Charlotte: The effective self-defense strategies or how I feel great (but tired) after jiu jitsu.

Jake: No matter what mood I have been in before jiu jitsu practice, I always have felt great when I left.  It’s fun learning something new, training with positive people, and watching my daughter grow more confident in her skills.

NOVA: What is most special about a family training jiu jitsu together?

Charlotte: You can learn a new technique or sweep at training and then practice it at home if you're confused or need to learn it again.

Jake: I think kids pick up on BJJ a lot quicker than adults, so I take away a lot from watching Charlotte train at the kids’ class.  I enjoy debriefing with Charlotte on the way home from practice.  We talk about what went well and what was difficult.  We enjoy the friendly people we train with.  It’s a great way to take a break from virtual learning/technology.

Thank you to the Forysteks for their time sharing their dedication to family and to jit jitsu. If you would like to train in Pewaukee as well, we are taking inquiries ONLINE (both Kids and Adults BJJ). View the class schedule here, and visit NOVA Pewaukee’s Facebook page Cobra Kai Jiu Jitsu On The Lake for updates.

And tune in next month as we feature NOVA Oak Creek member Kurt, who has continually trained with us the longest in our Kickboxing program! Talk about motivation for the New Year!
