*Update On NOVA Event This Saturday, Sept 4th*

Hello NOVA Family:

As many of you know, we’ve been working with the Oak Creek community to put together a large-scale, end of summer event at NOVA for Saturday, September 4th. Although we did make progress in getting proper permits, we decided to hold off hosting an event of this magnitude to a later date.

However, because many people had put this date on their calendar, we have decided to still host a smaller scale event, where we will be filming footage for an upcoming mini-documentary about NOVA Gyms. This would feature the kids who train at NOVA, and our adults Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programs.

This would include interviews with some of the kids on what their training means to them, and the NOVA community that surrounds them.

The MMA Fight Team will also be featured, plus members of our Kickboxing & Fitness program who have had exceptional transformations for their personal health.

This Saturday we also strive for max participation in our 11am Adults GI BJJ class with Marc Laimon, to highlight on for the mini-documentary. We would like to get lots of action shots, with some interviews taking place as well.

In addition, during and after the classes, we would like to invite our NOVA families to come and hang out for the day. If they choose, put their gloves and/or GIs on to work out and train. And we will be having a potluck BBQ in conjunction with the day’s festivities!

TIMELINE FOR THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4:

Kids MMA & BJJ

9:30-10:00am: On-camera interviews

10:00-11:00am: Practice/training in MMA cage, on MMA mats, and on BJJ mats. We will split up the group where some will practice in GI in the MMA cage, some in MMA gloves & shins on the mats, and some in GI practicing BJJ on the mats in the other room.

MMA Fight Team and Adults Kickboxing & Fitness

10:00-11:00am: MMA Team practice in the cage plus interviews. We also encourage members in our Kickboxing & Fitness program to come during that 10:00 slot to hit pads, get a good workout, cheer on the team, and potentially be interviewed as well.

Adults BJJ

11:00am-12:00pm: Practice/training of Marc Laimon’s BJJ class. We would like full participation for this class. We encourage all to be in GI and get some great training and rolling in.

BJJ Open Mat plus Potluck BBQ to begin at noon

Please note BJJ Open Mat is still a go this day, in addition to the added activities. So anyone planning to train as usual from noon to 1pm is still welcome! The potluck BBQ will begin outside at noon as well.

Catch As Catch Can Micro Event to begin at 1pm

This micro event will take place in the MMA cage. We have 4 grapplers signed up for the event right now, and are still open to anyone interested in participating (adults only at this time). We are using this event purely as an exhibition-type event for “King of Catch” sanctioned ruleset (an event partnership we are currently in works with). This micro event will get coverage on the “Chicago MMA” website as well as NOVA’s. Please see Chris if you’d like to participate in Catch as Catch Can.

Click Here to Catch As Catch Can Rules >>>

We encourage all to come throughout the day, hang out, train, and enjoy some great food. As a reminder this is a potluck style BBQ. Please bring different proteins and/or veggies to put on the grill, healthy side dishes, water/beverages, utensils, etc. Linda will keep track of who can bring what for the BBQ. Please email info@novagyms.com if you are able to bring something for Saturday!

This is a nice opportunity for us to spend some time together at the gym. Bring your family to join in the fun. We will be taking lots of pictures, so get those smiles ready ;-)

We look forward to bringing everyone together this Saturday, September 4th. We would love for you to rep your NOVA gear if you have it, and if not, we have new NOVA merch in. Please see a NOVA Member Services Rep if you’d like a sneak peek at the gear before Saturday, and to reserve your size!

-THANK YOU/OSS-

HIGHLIGHTS FROM HENRY MATAMOROS BJJ SEMINAR AT NOVA OAK CREEK

NOVA Gyms recently welcomed Henry Matamoros for a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Seminar. He is Wisconsin's 1st ever Black Belt and considered the Godfather of BJJ in WI. Henry informed us of the early days of BJJ in WI, and showed us techniques from his unique style. He also discussed the growth of the sport, and how some of his students who are now black belts were in attendance, including guest instructor Andre DeVillier, and NOVA’s own Coach Kaz, who was one of his first students. Henry also demonstrated a cool triangle from the back, that we will certainly apply to our game.

Here are some pictures from the seminar, including several Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stripe promotions, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belt promotions for Matt L, Luke S and Gavin S. Congrats Matt on your Purple Belt Promotion, Luke on your Blue Belt Promotion, and Gavin S on your Grey/White Belt Promotion!

OTHER IMPORTANT NOVA GUIDELINES:

  • To help with COVID compliance regarding capacity and spacing in the common area, we kindly ask for NOVA parents to drop off their child/children for class, sign them in and then leave for the duration of the class. When coming back to pick up your child/children, again please sign them out before departing.

  • An alternative to leaving the facility would be to participate in our simultaneous Adult Fitness Kickboxing classes (ask about family discounts!)

  • And to everyone, as a reminder, there are no shoes past the front area cage. And please make sure to neatly place your shoes UNDERNEATH the cubbies up front, not in them.

  • Also- please remember to grab your belongings after each class. Items left behind go into a lost and found at the gym, but note unclaimed items may be taken to Goodwill if left an extended amount of time.

New injury insurance protection for under $25 a month?

If you have not checked it out yet, NOVA Gyms recommends you consider www.JiuJitsuInsurance.com to learn more about a new insurance policy that will help you pay your medical bills if you or your family are hurt or injured from an accident at the gym (or anywhere for that matter because it covers you 24/7). If you are active in MMA & Jiu Jitsu or other recreational combat sports, then a policy like this will pay for itself over the course of time. For about $25 per month, this policy will pay you directly if you have an accident or injury that needs medical attention.

These programs also have an accidental life insurance policy built into it, so if you passed from an accident your beneficiary will get a check similar to a life insurance policy (average benefit is $75,000). Beyond the life insurance protection, these insurance programs will cover (send you a check for) any accidental injuries (pay you upfront), hospitalizations (from the injury), or surgeries (treatment for the injury) whether they happen on or off the Jiu Jitsu mats (as well as on or off the job!).

NOVA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

It’s a new year, with new goals, and as we continue to motivate one another on the mats, we want to highlight our longest continuous member at NOVA, Kurt in Oak Creek:

NOVA: What brought you into Nova when the doors first opened in 2014?

Kurt: My wife and I just moved to the area and I was looking for a new gym. After looking around and not finding what I will call a "traditional gym” at that time near us, I found NOVA. I was looking for something a little different from lifting weights and treadmills and decided to give it a try.

NOVA: You have continually trained the longest with us in our Kickboxing program. What about kickboxing and/or Nova, has kept you going strong all these years?

Kurt: Wow I didn't realize that! It's fun! It’s also a great stress relief, good for my cardio. Hitting the bag and pad work gets a lot of stress and energy out and lets me relax more.

NOVA: Many of our coaches have praised the hard work and training ethic you've put into each class. What motivates you most in accomplishing your fitness goals?

Kurt: I just try and improve a little each time. We have great coaches, each one with their own insight on form and motions, this helps me to fine tune my workout and skills. Even after these years I’ve got a lot to learn yet and improve upon.

NOVA: What would you say is the most positive benefit of kickboxing?

Kurt: Cardio and stress relief. It really gets the heart going, I’ve learned to properly breath. It’s great to get the stress out from the day.

NOVA: What words of encouragement do you have for anyone hesitant about getting into the sport, or hesitant about improving their fitness as a whole?

Kurt: It really is for everyone but you need to take the time and listen to the coaches.  Paying attention to the coaches can really help you build up to where you want to be. Heavy bags are a great starting point but the real fun is working with pads. They are a lot of fun and let you really understand the reasons why the coaches have been teaching what they have. Many of the other members are also great resources and everyone is there to learn and help one another.

Thank you Kurt for your time sharing your experiences at NOVA, and for the New Year’s motivation!

The holidays are about family, and spending as much time as we can with our loved ones. Meet Jake and Charlotte Forystek- a dynamic father/daughter duo who train at NOVA Pewaukee, having found a unique way to spend more time together: training BJJ on the mats.

Nova Gyms Pewaukee BJJ Family

NOVA: How long have you been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a whole, and when did you start your training at Nova?

Charlotte: We started in March, then it shut down because of the pandemic and we started training again in June.

NOVA: What made each of you decide to start your journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Charlotte: My dad introduced it to me and I thought that it was a great idea, and my interest in sports has always been wrestling and grappling. They cancelled middle school wrestling this year, so I am happy I can learn jiu jitsu.

Jake: I was introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the military when I was deployed to Iraq. I wanted to join a school as soon as I got back in 2005, but my wife and I were starting a family and were busy with family, careers, etc. We have three daughters.  Charlotte is the youngest one, and she is the first who expressed interest in learning BJJ.  That was my ticket!

NOVA: How much has jiu jitsu changed you, not just physically, but mentally?

Charlotte: Jiu jitsu has strengthened me physically and has given me an open mindset about grappling.

Jake: Training BJJ has helped me lose my COVID-19 belly and get in shape as a wrestling coach.  It has improved my mindset in many ways.  It gives me something to look forward to after a stressful day.  It’s super fun learning something new.  It teaches humility and a growth mindset.  It’s super humbling getting submitted repeatedly, but that makes getting your first submission even better.

NOVA: What would you say is the most positive benefit of training jiu jitsu?

Charlotte: The effective self-defense strategies or how I feel great (but tired) after jiu jitsu.

Jake: No matter what mood I have been in before jiu jitsu practice, I always have felt great when I left.  It’s fun learning something new, training with positive people, and watching my daughter grow more confident in her skills.

NOVA: What is most special about a family training jiu jitsu together?

Charlotte: You can learn a new technique or sweep at training and then practice it at home if you're confused or need to learn it again.

Jake: I think kids pick up on BJJ a lot quicker than adults, so I take away a lot from watching Charlotte train at the kids’ class.  I enjoy debriefing with Charlotte on the way home from practice.  We talk about what went well and what was difficult.  We enjoy the friendly people we train with.  It’s a great way to take a break from virtual learning/technology.

Thank you to the Forysteks for their time sharing their dedication to family and to jit jitsu. If you would like to train in Pewaukee as well, we are taking inquiries ONLINE (both Kids and Adults BJJ). View the class schedule here, and visit NOVA Pewaukee’s Facebook page Cobra Kai Jiu Jitsu On The Lake for updates.

And tune in next month as we feature NOVA Oak Creek member Kurt, who has continually trained with us the longest in our Kickboxing program! Talk about motivation for the New Year!

CHECK IN PROCEDURES FOR ALL MEMBERS

  • PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SIGN IN AND OUT, each day you attend class. Not only is it important for contact tracing purposes, but it helps to track attendance, which assists our coaches with promotions and recognition for their students. After you sign in, our front desk staff then marks attendance in a tracker app. If we don’t have your picture on file, please smile the next time you’re in, so we can add your pic to your profile :-)

  • Parents (not kids) must sign in for their child/children when arriving, and sign out after coming back to pick them up after class.

  • Per COVID precautions and guidelines, to keep capacity under limits, we ask for parents to drop off their child/children for class, sign them in and depart for the duration of the class. When coming back to pick up your child/children, again please sign them out before departing.

  • Governor Evers has extended the mask mandate into January 2021. Please bring a mask to class. (Those with medical conditions or sensory sensitivities that prevent them from wearing a face covering are exempt). We will keep our ceiling fans on to help with air circulation during class.

  • To keep our front storage cubbies as clean and germ-free as possible, please store your shoes UNDERNEATH the cubbies (Oak Creek location). We have laid out mats below the cubbies to store your shoes during class. This is especially important for when salt gets poured on the sidewalks, to place your shoes underneath so the salt does not damage and dirty the cubbies.

NOVA STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

In October, Caleb W competed at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) Illinois Championship. Caleb was our first kid to compete since the pandemic halted competitions for most of this year. KIDS PROMOTIONS

Prior to the mandated Covid-closure, there were some students working on their Judo promotions. Coach Scott has not forgotten about that. Now that we’re back up and running, he wants to work their way back up and not rush the very important promotions, and anticipates it happening very soon. With judo classes one night a week, promotions take more time than jiu jitsu, which trains more often. Please continue letting your children know they’re doing a great job and to keep up the hard work!

Regarding Jiu Jitsu promotions, we had some promotions in July:

Coach Mat promoted Miles Ferris at NOVA Pewaukee. Congratulations Miles on your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gray/White Belt Promotion!

DEDICATION TO GYM CLEANLINESS

Gym cleanliness and personal hygiene is important now more than ever. Because of COVID-19 we ask that members answer a few questions each time you attend class for safety purposes.

When you arrive for your fitness or martial arts class, please make sure that you check in and check out at the front desk. When you arrive for classes you will not be able to wear street shoes inside the training center. Members can train on the mats barefoot after washing their feet in the foot cleaning system, in a pair of socks, or in a pair of shoes that have never been worn outside. We recommend keeping a pair of sandals that have never been worn outside in your gym bag, to wear inside the gym and in the bathrooms. The Dollar Store across the street has flip flops available for just a buck— perfect to keep on hand for the gym.

Members need to have their own boxing gloves for training at the gym. Please bring your own (clean) gloves with you to class, or you can purchase a pair of gloves from us at the gym.

Fitness class members: Please also bring tennis shoes for the duration of the summer, as we sometimes run, warm up or perform drills outside!
Jiu jitsu members: GIs must be washed after each class whether you sweat in it or not. Please take a minute to review our GI washing and maintenance guidelines.

All members: Next time you’re in check out our NEW MERCH up front, including shirts, GIs and hand protection gloves (for added protection under your boxing gloves, and helps keep glove interior fresher!)

We look forward to summer with our wonderful NOVA COMMUNITY. Please direct questions/comments/feedback to info@novagyms.com.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend!

Thank you/OSS!
